Night Strangers - a 2 out of 5 stars disappointment

The Night StrangersI have so many books waiting to be read and normally, if I find a book that doesn't measure up, I stop reading and pick up the next book. Unfortunately I pushed myself to finish this one...

The Night Strangers by Chris Bohjalian

My rating: 2 of 5 stars - Could have reached higher, further, but ultimately disappoints...

I love nothing more than a good ghost story. In the opening pages, I knew that I had a ghost story as well as a well written literary tale. Bohjalian is a highly skilled writer, which was particularly evident as he used second person point of view every time our main character Chip, the pilot who crashed after birds fly into his jet engines and cripple the plane. His skill with second person point of view (where everything is phrased as "you") draws you into his story and you immediately feel like you are in the story and completely understand him. He uses third person, limited point of view with others in the book, even the cat, and yes, that works too.

Unfortunately Bohjalian ultimately disappoints. What started out as a deliciously creepy ghost story with literary undertones and an overall gothic feel, devolves into nothing but a graphic horror tale. I pushed myself to finish this book and was left awake and upset for hours after I turned the last page.
