Enchanting story of good and evil in faerie

Wish (Faerieground Trilogy, #1)Wish by Beth Bracken
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Soli and Lucy are best friends. When Soli asks Lucy to talk to the boy she likes, Lucy ends up kissing him. Soli is filled with such jealousy that she wishes her friend away... and Lucy disappears. Thus begins a faerie tale full of sinister darkness and danger.

This story borders on a graphic novel. The prose is spare and the illustrations are beautiful. The writing is at first childlike, but it slowly grew on me. Told from the point of view of Lucy and Soli in first person with chapters of their own, the story feels personal and immediate.

I had put off reading this book, unsure of whether I would enjoy it or not. I enjoyed it so thoroughly that I stayed up until past my bedtime reading it.
